Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is recognised as one of the world'sbest drives. Along its length are stunning coastal views, lovely seaside towns, the beautiful and ancient rainforests of the Otway Ranges and a range of wildlife.

Before the road was built most of the towns along the coast only had the sea as their link to Melbourne and Geelong. From Lorne the coach road went through dense bush to Winchelsea where it met the rail line.

The idea for a road was around since 1864 but it only came about at the end of World War 1 when it was thought it would be a way to provide employment to soldiers returning from the war. 3,000 ex ”diggers” were employed to build the road and it was built as a memorial to those that died in the conflict.

Surveying began in 1918 and construction began in 1919 and finished in 1932. By 1922 the Eastern View to Lorne section was completed and the Lorne to Apollo Bay and Anglesea to Lorne sections were finished in 1932. The road is 243kms in total today.

The most amazing thing about the road is that it was built by hand with pick and shovel and the story goes that no-one died in an accident during construction.

Torquay is a popular seaside town with holiday makers and is the start of the Great Ocean Road. It was originally occupied by the Wathaurong people until white settlement occurred around 1871, before then picnickers visited the area from about 1860.

In 1891 the Joseph Scammell was shipwrecked off Torquay and her anchorsare on display at front beach and the boat ramp. The surf life saving club opened in 1946 and is considered to be theoldest and largest club in Victoria. We've been lucky enough to see whales frolicking here as they make their way home after mating in the Southern Ocean.

Due to its proximity to Melbourne Torquay has grown substantially and now has a number of golf courses and hotels including Peppers adjacent to the Sands Golf Resort and the Crowne Plaza. There are a range of restaurants, cafes and shops including a large and popular range of surf clothing outlets.

Bells Beach is tucked away off the main road and is the site of the world's longest running Surf Carnival Bells Beach was originally part of farmland ownedby a man called Bell and this was one of the best private beaches around. The Carnival is run every Easter and attracts competitors from all over the world.

Bells was also where the final scene of the movie Point Break was set although to the disappointment of a lot of fansit wasn’t actually filmed here.

Returning to the main road Anglesea is the next town where in the early 1900’s beach boxes lined the river bank and the dunes alongthe beach. The town started to grow in 1919 with the building of the Great OceanRoad. Today it still retains much of its village atmosphere and with patrolled surf and swimming beaches and the Anglesea River running through town there are lots of options for enjoying the water or strolling along the walkways along the river bank.

Anglesea has a history of fires with major fires occurring in 1966and 1982 but by far the worst were the Ash Wednesday fires on 16^thFebruary 1983 when over 140 houses and several lives were lost. In the decades since the bush has regrown and the animals have returned.

At Aireys Inlet Split Point Lighthouse built in 1890 became a welcome relief for sailorstrying to navigate the treacherous waters between Victoria and Tasmania.

As with Anglesea and many other areas in Victoria the Ash Wednesdayfires were devastating in Aireys Inlet, in fact they were worse here than mostother places, practically wiping out the town, destroying over 170 houses. The town has been rebuilt and like most towns along the Great Ocean Road tourism is their main industry.

a la grecque is one of the few restaurants in Aireys Inlets. There is a cafe located near the lighthouse which is said to be famous for its scones.

Lorne is situated on Louttit Bay, named after a Captain Louttit who sought shelter there in 1841 whilst retrieving cargo from a nearby shipwreck. Timber cutting started int he Otway Ranges and sawmills were established and tramlines ran out of the bush down onto the beach were the timber was transferred to ships and taken to Geelong or Melbourne.

The town has a number of historic buildings including the Grand Pacific Hotel opened in 1879 and the Lorne Hotel which opened in 1876 along with construction of the pier.

Lorne has a population of around 1,000 permanent residents but every New Years Eve this swells to around 13,000 and over the first weekend in January up to 20,000 people will come to watch around 4,000 compete in the Pier to Pub swim race. This is described in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest organized ocean swim.

Lorne has some of the largest accomodation providers along the coast including the Cumberland Lorne Resort, Mantra Erskine House and The Grand Pacific.

It also has a range of restaurants, cafes and shops. Qdos Arts Gallery located high on the hill behind Lorne has a gallery, cafe and sculpture park.
A great place to view the ocean and the Great Ocean Road is Teddy’s Lookout which is named after a local ranger who used to go up there to look for stray cattle. The rotunda dates from the 1880’s.

Kennett River is a small settlement between Lorne and Apollo Bay and a popular spot for tourists to stop and look for Koalas andNative Birds.

The Great Ocean Road starts to wind through the rainforest of the Otways before coming back to the coast and onto one of the most popular sights of the journey the 12 Apostles

The 12 Apostles like many of the strucutres along this part of the coasline show how the neverending force of the Southern Ocean carves the coastline over time.

Loch Ard Gorge was named after the clipper Loch Ard which was wrecked onMutton Bird Island in1878 after a 3 month journey fromEngland. Only two of the fifty one on board survived. The gorge has been the location for scenes from The Pirate Movie in 1982 and the 1992 TV series Journey to the Center of The Earth.

Port Campbell is a lovely sheltered town named after Captain Alexander Campbell, a whaler who soughtshelter there during a storm in the 1840’s. Even today it is still the onlysheltered refuge between Apollo Bay and Warrnambool.

In 1882 the town became famous when someone decided that, with peopleworried (unjustly) about a Russian invasion, he would spread rumors of aso-called invasion and he told The Age newspaper that their fleet was ready toattack. Some other newspapers in Melbourne went as far as to report massacresand thousands of Russian troops making their way towards Melbourne. Finally someone sailed to Port Campbell to find out what was happeningand instead found out the truth.

London Bridge was a double span arch and resembled its namesake but in Janury 1990 the arch closest to the mainland collapsed leaving two people stranded out on the other arch. Some people now refer to it as the London Arch.

Phillip Island

Phillip Island is located approx 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne and is famous for its beaches, motor racing circuit and wildlife.

The highlight of any visit to the Island is the iconic Penguin Parade where you can watch the little penguins make their way across the beach heading towards their nesting areas after spending their day hunting in the ocean.

Once upon a time, you could sit on the beach in the evening and the penguins would wander past quite close to you. It was an amazing experience, but as crowds grew the need to protect the penguins and their habitat meant viewing platforms and walkways were constructed. Today there are a range of experiences that you can purchase including having a Park Ranger guide you through the penguin colony and enjoying the comfort of a Sky Box where you’ll also have fantastic views across the beach.

Koala Conservation Centre

The Koala Conservation Centre is set up to show you how koalas live in the wild with very little human intervention. You can wander along an elevated boardwalk and see these amazing furry mammals in their natural habitat and have the opportunity to ask questions of the Rangers who manage the Centre.

There is also an interactive Visitor Centre where you can learn about the koala and purchase gifts from the gift shop.

Churchill Island Heritage Farm

Churchill Island Heritage Farm provides insights into what life was like living on a farm in the early 1900’s. The farmhouse has been beautifully restored and there are a range of interesting outbuildings that give the impression that you’ve travelled back through time. Nobbies

The Nobbies Centre showcases Australian fur seals and the marine life of the Southern Oceans. Entry is free and there is a large cafe. information centre and gift shop. From the centre and boardwalks you can look across to Seal Rocks; a breeding ground for over 20,000 Australian Fur Seals.

If you want to see the Seals up close you can organise a boat tour of Seal Rocks from a range of operators.

Beaches

Phillip Island has a range of beaches suitable for swimming, fishing and surfing. Woolamai is the longest beach on the Island and the site of the only Surf Life Saving Club. When visiting the beaches you should be aware that Australian beaches can be dangerous so you should always swim on a patrolled beach and between the flags. To learn more about beach safety.

Cowes Beach

Cowes is a relatively calm beach and popular with families. Cowes is also home to the Island's main shopping strip with a range of specialty stores, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and other stores.

Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach caters for both sufers and families and is located between Woolamai and Cowes.

Forrest Caves are part of eroding red basalt cliffs located between Woolamai and Surf Beach. You can wander through the caves at low tide and swim on the adjacent beach care should be taken as high waves and rips are common.

Newhaven and San Remo (on the mainland) are popular for fishing.

National Vietnam Veterans Musuem

The Island is also home to the National Vietnam Veterans Musuem which has displays of photographs, memorabilia, vehicles and aircraft that detail the history of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1972.

Phillip Island Racing Circuit

Celebrating 60 years in 2012 the Phillip Island Racing Circuit is home to car racing and motor bike racing drawing large crowds to the Island for major events.

Another popular attraction is Panny's Phillip Island Chocolate Factory where you can buy or taste belgium choclates and learn about chocolates in the Amazing World of Chocolates.

The Phillip Island Wildlife Park is set over 60 acres and home to more than 100 species of animals and birds. Its a little tired and in need of work but popular with visitors as you can feed a range of animals as you wander through the park.

Churchill Island Heritage Farm

Churchill Island is a working Heritage Farm that can be accessed from Phillip Island. The 57 heactare Island was originally inhabited by the Bunurong people with the first European inhabitants finding remains of canoes and fires.

European settlement started when Lieutenant James Grant sailed the Lady Nelson to the island in 1801. He planted seeds he'd been provided, felled trees and built a hut making this the first European agricultral pursuit in Victoria.

The Island forms part of the Churchill Island Marine National Park and is maintained by Parks Victoria. From an Indigenous cultural perspective Aborigianl middens and the remains of stone foundations are also preserved with the area of Western Port surrounding the island listed under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (RAMSAR Convention).

The gardens are extensive and well maintained. They include some interesting sculptures, Norfolk Pines, ancient Moonah trees, wetlands and a range of plants and herbs. You can wander around the gardens, house and farm buildings on a range of paths. The grade is very easy.

There is a Visitor Centre on the Island which features an exhibition on the history of the island, a quality gift shop and a licensed café. You can enjoy a snack or lunch including a glass of wine and take in the breathtaking views of Western Port.

Ticket prices are around $10 for an adult or you can purchase a 3 Park Pass and visit the Island along with the Koala Conservation Centre and end the day with the Penguin Parade. Further information and to purchase tickets

Yarra Valley

Located approx an hour's drive from Melboune the Yarra Valley was Victoria's first wine growing region. Today it is a mecca for food and wine and also home to attractions such as the Healesville Sanctuary Wildlife Park. (Read more about Healesville on one of our previous blogs.)

The Yarra Valley spans a large area bordered by the towns of Gembrook in the south, Kinglake in the north, Wantirna in the west and Mount Gregory in the east. Major towns include Lilydale, Healesville, Yarra Glen and St Andrews.

Much of the area has lush green pastures surrounded by mountains making it a fantastic place to visit for a day, weekend getaway or longer stay. Accomodation, restaurants and local produce are all plentiful and there are many wineries both small and large. We've featured a couple here and you can find more on Wineries of the Yarra Valley.

Yering Station on the Melba Highway is one of the Yarra Valley's best known brands. One reason is probably because it was Victoria's first vineyard estabished in 1838. Today its infrastructure is made up of historical and modern buildings. These include a wine bar restaurant, cellar door and produce store.

Yering Station also has beautifully landscaped gardens and hosts a farmers market on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

Tarra Warra

Tarra Warra winery is located on the road between Yarra Glen and Healesville.Their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have consistently receivied widespread acclaim and won many prestigious Australian and international awards. Besides the winery they have a restaurant and a privately funded Art Gallery. TarraWarra Art Gallery.

Since opening the Gallery has been recognised as one of the cultural jewels of the Yarra Valley providing visitors with a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Also located along the Yarra Glen Healesville Road is Train Trak Winery. Originally a dairy farm vines were planted in 1995 and the first vintage released in 2000. Producing premium varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon its one of our favourite small wineries in the area.

Zono Restaurant is located at Train Trak Winery and since its opening in 2007 has featured in the The Age Good Food Guide and been recognised in the “OUTthere Food & Wine Awards” as one of the “Hottest Winery Restaurants” in Australia.

Bordered by the mountains of the Great Dividing Range and stretching across 10 hectares of vines along the Maroondah Highway Oakridge is a family-owned estate dedicated to producing outstanding and distinctive wines. In 2012 it won the Winery of the Age in the Age & Sydney Morning Herald's Good Wine Guide. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the food reasonably priced for a winery.

Chandon was established by French champagne house Moët & Chandon in 1986 and has focussed on wine quality, style and consistency – respecting its distinguished French heritage whilst embracing the spirit and innovation of Australian winemaking. The infrastructure is amazing and you can join a guided tour of the winery or wander along yourself and read the story boards along the way.

Healesville Country Club

The range of accomodation in the Yarra Valley is extensive from bed and breakfasts, hotels, resorts, cabins and homes. We've often stayed at the Healesville Country Club which is one of the RACV resorts. It is nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and has 80 rooms all with stunning views, a golf course, restaurants and day spa.

Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park is part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area. Located 110 kilometres from Mildura or 316 kilometres from Broken Hill. Travelling by car from Mildura you will need to travel approx 90 kilometres on dirt although its a well maintained road and not everyone was driving a 4WD.

The landscape is amazing with the centre piece being the Walls of China which are dramatic sand and clay structures sculptured by erosion.

Access to this area has now been restricted not only because its fragile but because of its significant to the Paakantji, Ngyiampaa and Mutthi Mutthi people who call the area home.

These walls formed the edge of what was once a great lake where Aboriginals are recognised as having roamed for 50,000 years. This makes it one of the most important Aboriginal sites in Australia and many important relics have been discovered in the area. Mungo Lady was found in the 1960's by a young geologist Jim Bowler and Mungo Man was found in 1974 by a slightly older Jim.

Remarkable human footprints approx 20,000 years old were discovered in 2003 and many other interesting discoveries have been made over the years.

Aboriginal Discovery Tour

The Paakantji and Ngyiampaa are involved in the care and management of the park together with the NSW National Park and Wildlife Service. They conduct Aboriginal Discovery Tours to share their heritage with visitors. You can only gain access to the Walls of China (lunette) area with a licensed tour operator, traditional owner or Parks Ranger. Cost is $10 per person for a 2.5 hour tag along tour to the Wall of China area. Tours commence at the Visitor Centre. Its an amazing experience and fantastic value.

You can explore the area via a 70 kilometre one way track that takes you across the lake floor around the Walls of China and through dune and mallie country. There are information signs at points of interest along the way that explain the geological formation of the area, aboriginal history and pastoral settlement of the area. If you don't have enough time to do this drive a shorter 10 kilometre Zanci Pastoral loop is an option.

Wildlife and birdlife are prolific in the park. We observed kangaroos, goannas, emus and a range of birdlife. We also saw a range of plant life including grasses, saltbush, white cypress pines, belah/rosewood, mallie and acacias.

In the 1850s the Gol Gol Station was established and the Mungo woolshed was built around 1869. This building still stands and is near the Visitor Centre. The remains of the Zanci homestead, shearing shed and yards can be found along the self drive tour. This was originally part of the Gol Gol Station and was carved off after World War 1. The remains include a dugout where they used to keep their food. Going down into the dugout the temprature drops a number of degrees which makes you understand how effective this structure was.

There are 2 camps in the Park. We stayed at Main Camp as it was close to the Visitor Centre and enabled us to do the Aboriginal Discovery Tour in the evening before heading off to drive the loop the next morning. The campground includes toilets but showers are only available at the Visitor Centre.

Camp fires are allowed in fire boxes which are provided except during summer (December to March). You are not allowed to pick up wood in the park as it provides a natural habitat for wildlife but you can obtain some for a small fee.

Apostlebirds

The second campground is Belah Camp located half way around the loop. No camp fires are allowed in this campground. Toilets are available at this site. Camping fees are via an honour system and paid via cash left in envelopes at the Visitor Centre.

If you don't want to camp accomodation is available in the Shearers Quarters for a reasonable price. These include a communial kitchen and dining room with full access to utensils, crockery, fridges and stoves. Shearers Quarters are located next to the Visitor Centre.

The Visitor Centre also includes a large display providing a range of insights into the Park its certainly worth spending some time at the Centre.

Manly and the Northern Beaches Walk

One of the best ways to travel to Manly is via the famous Manly Ferry as it provides you with an opporunity to see both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House from a different angle as you depart Circular Quay.

The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes and you disembark at Manly Cove, a sheltered and sandy beach located on the harbour side. This beach is ideal for family picnics, sailing, fishing or just relaxing in the sun as the waters are relatively calm.

There are a range of walks from Manly ranging in distance and difficulty. The North Head walk was an amazing experience. We wandered through beautiful heathland and saw a range of wildflowers, birds, butterflies, lizards and other wildlife that could be heard in the undergrowth.

Much of the walk is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park and the North Head Sanctuary so all flora and fauna are protected.

As we wandered along the track there were also stunning views of the Harbour and Ocean side of the Head. Dolphins and whales can also be seen during parts of the year an experience we unfortunately missed.

The North Head area also has a number of historical sites including the Quarantine Station, School of Artillery and fortifications that were once part of the defence of Sydney Harbour. You can take a tour of the Quarantine Station or visit the National Artillery Museum.

Tracks vary from rock steps to dirt to paved paths and wire paths constructed to minimise impact to sensitive areas. Towards the end of the walk we decended to Shelly Beach a sheltered cove which was crowded with people enjoying the spring sunshine.

From Shelly beach we could see the famous pines and stretch of sand that brings tourists to the Manly oceanside beach.

Before catching the ferry back to Sydney we enjoyed a lovely lunch at Cafe Brisa - great value fish and chips served with a lovely salad which topped off a great day in the Northern Beaches area. Total distance is around 11 kilometres.

Warrnambool

Warrnambool is a historic seaside town located on the Great Ocean Road first settled by Europeans in the 1840s. It's a great place to visit as you can relax on the beach, learn about the shipwreck coast or spend some time watching for whales at Logan's Beach Whale Nursery.

The area has a rich Indigenous history with artefacts being found in the volcanic ash layers of Tower HIll which was formed around 30,000 years ago in a volcanic eruption. Warrnambool is in fact, an Indigenous word from a nearby volcanic cone translated to mean land between two rivers, two swamps or ample water.

Warrnambool is part of the Shipwreck Coast which extends 110 kilometres along the Great Ocean Road from Moonlight Head to Port Fairy to the west of Warrnambool. This trail incorporates 25 shipwrecks marked by road signs and information plaques and provides a fascinating insight into the region’s shipwreck history.

Flagstaff Hill Marine Village

You can learn about this shipwreck history at Flagstaff Hill Marine Village an award winning tourism attraction. It has a museum which is reputed to hold Australia's richest shipwreck collection as well as an 1870's village with the Lady Bay Lighthouse. The village provides a glimpse into the maritime life of the 1870's era. Each night there is a state of the art sound and laser show called SHIPWRECKED which brings to life the tale of the Loch Ard a ship that was wrecked in 1878.

Whalers of the 1830s were the first Europeans to utilise the bay, which they named Lady Bay in 1844. Today Logan's Beach is popular for viewing Southern Right Whales. The best time for viewing is when baby whales are born between July and September. They then migrate with their families to the colder food rich waters near Antarctica for the summer. Fishing is a popular activity in Warrnambool as you can fish along the Hopkins River, in the ocean or from one of the islands or inlets. All fishing requires a licence which you can obtain from the Visitor Information Centre.

You can drive from Melbourne to Warrnambool via the Great Ocean Road by 2 routes, one inland passing through Colac which is a journey of around 3.5 hours and 265 kilometres. Alternatively the scenic journey via the Great Ocean Road will take approx 5 hours and 349 kilometres.

The Flinders Ranges are world renowed for their geological history and you can also see evidence of Aboriginal habitation and European settlement. The traditional owners, the Adnyamathanha, lived in the Flinders Ranges for tens of thousands of years and the area holds deep cultural significance to them.

Heading into the Flinders Ranges

The Adnyamathanha people describe the formation of the land and their spiritual belifes through their Yura Muda stories. Over tens of thousands of years the Yura Muda stories have passed from generation to generation interpreting the cave paintings and sacred sites found in the Flinders Ranges. Mythological tracks and songlines explain the formation of the land, plants and animals.

Sandstone walls with ancient Aboriginal rock engravings can be found in the Sacred Canyon a short walk along a dry creek bed lined with majestic river red gums. The age of the engravings is unknown and the Adnyamathanha people believe that the engravings were created by ancestral beings during the creation time.

Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is a natural ampitheatre and is steeped in local legend. It looks like a comet crater, but in reality the formation of the Flinders Ranges began 800 million years ago when the earth's crust was stretched and thinned creating a deep hollow. Following this the sea flooded in and during the next period huge amounts of rock and debris were deposited. Over time the land changed and gorges and valleys were formed. You can stay at the Wilpena Pound Resort or a range of camping grounds.

There are 3 National Parks in the Flinders Ranges covering 95,000 hectares:

In the mid 1800's Wilpena, Arkaba and Aroona were established as sheep stations and the pastoral industry flourished when the Government built a rail line to service mining that had also been established in the area. Remains of early settlement can still be found in the Ranges.

Yellow footed Rock-wallaby

The Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby can be found in Brachina and Wilkawillina gorges. These agile and shy animals were once close to extinction but have been saved by conservation programs. They live in rock crevices and caves and their colours blend into their surroundings so you'll need to be patient and have a keen eye to spot them amongst the rocks.

The Park has abundant wildlife and more than 100 bird species have been identified.

There are a range of activities you can enjoy in the Flinders Ranges including hot air ballooning, cycling, 4 wheel driving and camping.

Jan Juc is a seaside village wedged between Torquay and Bells Beach. Surrounded by tall cliffs the size of the sandy beach depends on the tide. When the tide is out it's a popular spot for walking and surf fishing. Dogs are allowed on some parts of the beach.

A 4 kilometre walking track winds along the cliff tops from Jan Juc to Bells Beach and provides spectacular views of the beach as you wander through beautiful coastal bushland.

Rock formations and rock pools provide areas of interest and I particularly love the point between Jan Juc and Torquay where a number of rock formations are accessible when the tide is out.

One of my favourite memories of Jan Juc was watching a Southern Right whale and its calf frolicking off Jan Juc beach. It travelled onto Fishermans's Beach at Torquay where large crowds of people gathered.

Uluru Kata Tjuta

Ask people who are about to head off to Central Australia what they expect the landscape to look like and most will describe the typical desert lots of sand, very little vegetation and hardly any life. Central Australia is far from like this, with several types of landscape and an abundance of flora and fauna, although not always visible.

Uluru NT Tourism

This is an ancient and spiritual place where around 550 million years ago the basin was involved in a major upheaval which formed a mountain range known as the Petermann Ranges Orogeny. With no plant life at this time bacteria and algae were able to break down the ranges along with normal erosion. As they eroded, the sediments were washed out to form alluvial fans and their remains now form Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

The inland sea disappeared around 300-400 million years ago and another upheaval, now known as the Alice Springs Orogeny, took place and raised the area above sea level. This is also when Uluru and Kata Tjuta were rotated to their present angle.

No-one understands the landscape and its relationship with its surroundings like the traditional owners, the Anangu people. The Anangu identify with 6 different landcapes, each having its own unique habitats and diverse flora and fauna.

Karu is the creekbeds and gullies found around Kata Tjuta at Walpa Gorge and The Valley Of The Winds. Anangu collected grass seeds from native millett and naked woolybut along with wood for tools and firewood from trees such as bloodwood and river redgum.

Puti is the open woodland areas of the park and often have large stands of mulga and other trees such as bloodwood and blue mallee. Shrubs include witchetty bush, wattles, grevilleas and hakeas. Ground cover can be grasses and Spinifex. Honey ants nest after rain and witchety grubs were a favourite food of the Bilby when they inhabited the park. Red kangaroos can sometimes be seen feeding when food is available.

Puli are the rocky gorges and stoney slopes of Uluru and Kata Tjuta and many animals use these areas for shelter, but graze and breed in other habitats. Euro, echidnas and fat tailed antechinus call this type of habitat home along with many birds who come here for shelter and water.

Pila is the spinifex plains that lie between the many sand dunes. They are the home of the desert oak and are the most prolific habitat in the park. Along with spinifex and desert oak you will find bloodwoods, umbrella bushes and honey plants such as the honey grevillea. Spinifex hopping mice and striped and giant desert skinks can be found along with the woma python, blue tongue lizard, emu, bustard and feral animals such as the fox and cat.

Uluru NT Tourism

Tali is the sand dunes, and taking a walk across one in the early morning will reveal a network of tracks left by the nocturnal inhabitants of the region. Spinifex hopping mice and other inhabitants of the Pila also inhabit Tali and some animals such as small skinks and other reptiles live specifically here. The marsupial mole has adapted itself to living under the sand and is completely blind. It is rarely seen and the tracks it leaves just under the surface are extremely hard to spot.

The last habitat is Nyara,the areas left behind after fires. Fires can be caused by natural reasons such as storms, accidentally caused by people or deliberately lit to protect and regenerate areas. Some animals such as spinifex hopping mice like Nyara for foraging for food whilst others will stay away till Spinifex cover returns. Desert raisin, bush tomato and edible grass seeds are part of the regeneration growth that occurs.

Of the more than 400 species of plant life, one is considered to be a threatened species within the park and that is the desert quandong. It is also considered vulnerable within the Northern Territory due to the fact that it is a favourite food of the many wild camels that roam unhindered across the landscape. The Anangu would pick and eat the fruit, which was a great source of vitamins, straight from the bush. Oils from the kernals were used as a conditioner for their hair.

Most of the plants in the park have a use to the Anangu whether as a source of food, medicine or to be used for purposes such as tools, bowls or ceremonial use such as didgeridoos and clapsticks.

Many of the rare and exotic plants exist around waterholes etc which are also the places frequented by tourists and this has to be considered when talking about looking after the park.

Fauna species within the park number nearly 300 with 28 types of mammal, over 70 reptiles, 180 birds, 4 frogs and 4 types of bats.

Birds range in size from the emu to tiny finches and wrens and they are the most common animals visitors to the park will notice. You may not see them at first but you will hear their sounds as you travel through the park. Remember to look up sometimes as you may see a wedge tailed eagle or other birds of prey circling the skies looking and waiting for their next meal.

Superb Fairy Wren

Reptiles include Kuniya (or woma python) and stimson python both of which are non-venomous. There are 8 types of Liru (poisonous snakes) including the western and king brown snakes. It is best to treat all snakes as venomous and avoid them.

Lizards can be seen as small as 300mm (pygmy goanna) and as large as the perentie which can grow to 2metres in length. A species of dragon that people love to see is the thorny devil and watching one move as they use a gentle rocking motion is incredible.

Red kangaroos are the largest marsupials in the park and they will graze in grassland where spinifex is not as common while the euro prefers rocky areas and might be seen around the slopes of Kata Tjuta. Some mammals such as the small mulgara (about the size of a small guinea pig) live in burrows beneath the sand.

The mala (rufous hare wallaby) was extinct in the park before being reintroduced within a feral animal proof enclosure. It is hoped in time to be able to release them into the general population of the park.

The mala and southern marsupial mole are both classed as endangered along with other animals such as the great desert skink, fawn hopping mice, brushtailed mulgara, princess parrot, emu and the Australian bustard. These animals are being monitored and management programs will be considered.

Visitors to the park have an important role to play in protecting the natural values of the park for without proper vigilance we can unknowingly bring in unwanted guests. Seeds and burrs love to travel with us, stuck to our clothes and vehicles and we should check both regularly to prevent this from happening.

When in the park we must stay on the pathways as this not only protects the native flora and fauna but also reduces the risk of spreading exotic plants etc. It can also help if we report sightings of feral animals to park staff so that if necessary they can take the appropriate control measures.

The Park is a fantastic asset to Australia and if we all work together to keep it that way it will be there for future generations to enjoy.

William Ricketts Sanctuary

The William Ricketts Sanctuary is in the Dandenong Ranges National Park just under an hour's drive from Melbourne's CBD.

Amongst the beautiful bushland are clay sculptures of aboriginal people and native wildlife. The sculptures are the creation of William Ricketts who was born in Richmond Victoria in 1898. When he was a child his mother took him and his siblings regularly to the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne where he began his facination with nature.

Later moving to the Dandenongs his love of nature and fascination with aboriginal people grew. He travelled a number of times into the Northern Territory where he lived with the Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte Aboriginal people. Their traditions and culture inspired his sculpture. He was particulalry fascinated with their connection to country and love of the land.

Whilst he was not an Aboriginal himself he believed he was from the lyrebird totem and he considered himself adopted by the Pitjantjatjara nation.

The sanctuary has a number of winding paths that allow you to meander through the bushland and view the range of scultures. William's cottage and kiln are still on the property and form an intregal part of a visit. There is also a cafe located next to the car park where you enjoy morning, afternoon tea or lunch.

Botanical Gardens Cranbourne

These amazing gardens have been established to showcase Australia's native bushland and include 363 hectares of untouched heathlands, wetlands and woodlands.

Established on the ancestral home of the Boonerwurrung people the gardens are an hour's drive from Melbourne. The ancient wetlands used by the Boonerwurrung still exist within the Cranbourne Gardens and some areas are rich in indigenous plant foods. Birds and animal life are also in abundance drawn to the area by the water.

The Gardens includes a number of areas including the red sand garden which reminds me of some of my favourite areas in Outback Australia. Just love the red of the dirt against the blue of the sky!

An area called the Dry River bed illustrates the power of water in shaping the landscape and river beds.

The Rockpool Waterway provides a great spot to sit and rest whilst you watch the water cascade down the sloping area to a small waterfall.

Other areas include the Eucalyptus Walk, water saving gardens and drought tolerant plantings.

There are a number of walking tracks around the gardens and also a bike trail. With a cafe, shop and playground the gardens appeal to people of all ages.

A second stage is currently under construction and expected to be finished in 2012. This new stage will include The Ian Potter Lakeside Precinct, Weird & Wonderful Garden and River Walk.

Wildlife encountered on tours

Australia has a range of unusual and interesting wildlife many of which we encounter whilst on tour.

Koala

One of the most popular is the koala as most tourists are keen to see these cute and cuddly marsupials.
On our tours we observe koalas in their natural environment whilst touring the Great Ocean Road or Great Otway National Park. Sometimes they will climb down out of the trees and wander across the road so care needs to be taken not to injure or kill these amazing animals.

A baby koala is known as a joey and when small is not so cute being hairless, blind and earless. When it is born it crawls into a pouch on its mother's belly and attaches itself to a teat where it feeds on milk for 6 months. During that time its fur, ears and eyes grow. Once outside the pouch the joey will stay close to the mother often riding on her back. Which is an amazing sight to see.

Koalas live in a particular type of gum tree that is also the source of their staple diet. The eucalyptus leaves they eat are low in protein and are toxic to many creatures. Given this a koala lacks energy and can be virtually motionless for around 16 to 18 hours a day.

The long term future of the koala is threatened due to a number of factors including habitat loss and the impacts of urbanisation. Most Australians would be pretty devastated if we lost these amazing creatures.

Kangaroo

The kangaroo is probably one of Australia's most recognised wildlife and is also another marsupial that's popular with tourists. There are over 60 species of kanagroos and their close relatives which include wallabies, wallaroos, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. The larger red kanagroo is found in arid regions and the eastern and western grey Kangaroos are found in great numbers across much of southern part of Australia.

Like the koala a baby kangaroo is called a joey and when born they find their way to their mother's pouch and fasten onto a teat where it remains for about 6 months. The joey then pokes its head in and out for a couple of weeks until it feels safe enough to fully emerge. Over the next 2 months it will still spend some time in the pouch before it becomes self sufficient.

Kanagroos in the Grampians

Kanagroos are herbivorous and eat a range of plants. They use their strong back legs to hop along and their tail provides balance. Its not true that they jump down the streets of our cities but they can be found close to residential areas in some parts of Australia.

Dingo

The dingo is a free roaming wild dog found in Outback Australia. Dingo is a European adaption of a name used by Aboriginals in NSW with many other clans calling them by different names.

Dingoes are nocturnal creatures in warmer areas but can roam during the day in colder parts of Australia. They are often observed on their own but in reality live in a social environment with other dingoes.

Often maligned by many our experience is that as long as you take care when close to a dingo, don't offer it food and pack away all your food and belongings at night they pose minimal threat to humans.

We're also lucky on some tours to encounter a range of birdlife.

Boobook Owl

The Boobook Owl is a small brown owl found in Australia they hunt mainly in the evenings and early morning and are sometimes active overnight. This owl was captured whilst on tour in the Outback.

The Superb fairy wren is a beautiful bird that is found in Australia. Like many birds the male has bright colouring whilst females are plain fawn.

Brampton Island

Brampton Island is one of the most southern islands in the Whitsundays Islands Queensland. Like many of these islands it has beautiful beaches and a range of water activities to enjoy.

We flew into the island from Mackay on a light plane, an experience that gave us a great view of the island as we came into land. We purchased the all inclusive meals package which ended up being a fantastic idea as the food was amazing with a different 3 course gourmet meal served everynight.

The island is a National Park so its not overdeveloped and there are a range of walking tracks which allowed us to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. We saw some stunning sights whilst circumnavigating the island and a range of birds and butterflies.

The highest point of the island is Brampton Peak which is 214 metres above sea level. It was a bit of hike to the top but the views were worthwhile.

At low tide you can walk to nearby Carlisle Island and relax on the beach looking back at the resort. You can then walk or swim back to Brampton Island.

I loved snorkelling in the shallow waters between Brampton and Carlisle Islands or just relaxing on one of the many beaches.

A great way to end a day on Brampton Island is to have quiet drink and watch the sunset across the ocean.

The resort was sold by Voyages in 2010 to Brampton Enterprises and was closed in January 2011 for redevelopment.

Healesville

Healesville is located in the Yarra Valley, Victoria and is probably best known as the home of the Healesville Sanctuary. The Sanctuary showcases more than 200 species of Australian wildlife which can be viewied in natural habitats set amongst 30 hectares of bushland.

The Sanctuary incorporates a wildlife hospital where you can view the amazing work they do saving and treating sick and injured wildlife.

Not to be missed is the Spirits of the Sky spectacular which is scheduled at 12 pm and 2.30 pm each day.

Healesville has much more to offer than just visiting the Sanctuary, as it's surrounded by beautiful Australian bushland. A great place to enjoy this, and located only a short drive from the Sanctuary, is Badger Creek. The picnic ground includes toilets and BBQ's and there are a range of tracks to wander along and experience the beauty of the area. These range in distance, with 2 shorts ones of approx 1 kilometre each being the Coranderrk track and the Lyrebird track.

The Corranderrk track is named after an indigenous mission that was established in the area in 1863 after a group of Wurundjeri elders squatted on a traditional camping site on Badger Creek and requested ownership of the site. The Lyrebird track is named after the lyrebird a ground dwelling bird that has the ability to mimic the natural and artifical sounds of their environment. We saw a female lyrebird whilst wandering along that track.

There are a range of penstocks located at Badger Weir which are used to regulate the flow of water into Coranderrk Weir. This pipe ensures water continues to flow into Badger Creek retaining the water supply to the many animals and birdlife that still live in the area.

12 Apostles

The 12 Apostles are one of the most popular attractions along the Great Ocean Road. They are part of the Port Campbell National Park and located between Princetown and Peterbough. Whether seen from the air or land these rock stacks are truely an amazing site.

These amazing rock stacks appear to rise out of the Southern Ocean. In fact they have been created from constant erosion of the limestone cliffs by the powerful action of the ocean's waves and blasing winds. Little by little caves are formed from the erorsion and after many years of swirling action the caves eventually become arches which over time collapse leaving the rock stacks isolated from the shore.

The power of the ocean and winds continues relentlessly so access near the 12 Apostles is now restricted. There are well set out paths and viewing platforms providing fantastic views along the coast in both directions.

You can access the beach via Gibsons Steps which are located on the Great Ocean Road just before you arrive at the 12 Apostles. These steps use the traditional access of the Kirrae Whurrong the original inhabitants of the area. They were carved into the cliff by Hugh Gibson a local settler.

There are toilets and a cafe and you can take a helicopter ride directly from the site. There are a number of options for helicopter rides including extended rides over Port Campbell http://www.12apostleshelicopters.com.au/

The 12 Apostles are located 275 kilometres west of Melbourne. Approximately a 4 hour drive along the Great Ocean Road via the scenic route and given the Great Ocean Road is one of the worlds most renowned drives the time and distance are well worth the effort as you'll travel through seaside towns with some of our famous surf beaches and have the chance to see wildlife in their natural environment along the way.

An alternative inland route is faster and less kilometres travelling via Winchelsea and Colac. Many people take the alternative route home.

Rainforests of the Otways

The Otways are part of the Great Otway National Park which is located in north west Victoria. The National Park covers a total area of 103,000 hectares and incorporates rainforest and coastal areas along the Great Ocean Road.

The Otway Ranges include an amazing rainforest with steep ridges and deep valleys with tall forests and fern clad gullies. There are a number of spectacular waterfalls and a range of walks that allow you to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the forest.

You can walk to a range of falls including Stevensons Falls, Hopeton Falls, Triplet Falls and Sabine Falls. For those who are unable to walk long distances Houpeton Falls can be viewed from above only a short walk from the car park.

Logging was once a big industry in the Otways and a railway line was built to transport the logs to the railhead and sawmills. Remnants of the old railway and plant can be found in some areas.

A bike trail has also been developed along the old railway line with two main sections one from Birnam station and picnic ground to Maggios Rd stretching 4.8 kilometres and the other Gellibrand to Wimba a distrance of 9.5 kilometres. Old Beechy Rail Trail

Thankfully logging is now limited to plantation timber but this still has impacts on habitat of native plants, birds and animals.

Tourism is now a major part of the Park and minimal impact touring is important to ensure the long term sustainability preserves the area for generations to come. In the summer the Otways provide a quiet, cool and peaceful environment. In the winter the waterfalls run and although it can be cold the Park is still enjoyable if you're suitably dressed.

Maits Rest is one of the most popular walks as its a short drive from Apollo Bay. Here you'll experience the beauty of the rainforest on a relatively easy walk. During the day you may be lucky to locate an Otway Black Snail. This is a carnivorous snail endemic to the region and recognised by a gold spot on its shell. At night you can experience glow worms.

Melba Gully is an interesting walk which includes a boardwalk constructed to minimise impact to the forest. The Gully is filled with myrtle beeches, blackwoods, tree ferns and there is an understory of low ferns and mosses.

The Otway Fly provides an opportunity to walk through the trees on a boardwalk and whilst wandering through the trees you gain a real sense of the majestic nature of this forest.

The Ridge Cafe is located in Beech Forest and recognised for its organic food. It has an amazing array of home made and tasty treats, our favourite is their chocolate pudding.

The Forrest Brewery and Cafe is also worth a visit and was the site of this year's launch of the Apollo Bay Music Festival Forrest Brewery & Cafe

Alice Springs is a Northern Territory town that is located in the centre of Australia. Said to be the heart and soul of the outback it has a long history having been established in the early 1900's.

Anzac Hill is a popular site as it provides a fantastic view of the town and is a memorial to members of the Australian and New Zealand services who have served in war.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service was started by Dr John Flynne in 1928 and in Alice Springs in 1937. The service delivers health care and 24-hour emergency service to those who live, work and travel throughout Australia. Its provided an amazing service over this time so a visit to the Flying Doctor Base is a must.

The National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame provides insights into the contribution women have made to outback life and makes anyou appreciate the challenges the early pioneers faced.

The Olive Pink Botanical Gardens includes both the gardens and a space where exhibitions are regularly held.

The Alice Springs Desert Park is a must see as it has an enormous selection of the plants and animals found across Central Australian deserts. The park provides an environment where these can be seen, smelt and heard on walking trails showcasing three desert habitats, The Desert Rivers, Sand Country and the Woodland habitat. You can also witness free-flying birds of prey in their live outdoor theatre.

The town is famous for its Aboriginal Art and as a gateway to many iconic sights including Uluru Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon.

I'd have to say that if you drew a large circle around Alice Springs you'd include some of the most memorable sights I've seen in Outback NT.

Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is a beautiful seaside village on the Great Ocean Road located approx 190 kilometres south west of Melbourne. With beautiful beaches, rolling hills as a backdrop Apollo Bay is also the gateway to the Great Otway National Park.

The beaches are suitable for swimming and surfing is also popular. Remember to swim between the flags on the patrolled beach. If you're not familar with what we mean by this see this site for beach safety and where to find a patrolled beach. Beach safety information

Fishing is also an option for visitors and there is a commercial fleet that operates out of the marina. You can moor your boat at the marina or purchase fresh seafood from the shop located there.

There are a number of walks located nearby including Marriners Falls a moderate walk taking takes approx 40 minutes from the car park. Depending on the time of the year you may have to wade through some water on the walk.

At the end you're rewarded with lovely moss covered walls and the waterfall. Its refreshing particularly on a hot day.

Maits Rest is a short drive from Apollo Bay and during the day provides a lovely rainforest walk. Its particularly enjoyable on a hot day. A night visit has the bonus of glow worms.

Apollo Bay is also the gateway to the Great Otway National Park where you'll experience beauiful rainforest and see a range of animals in their natural surroundings.

Lake Eyre

The Lake Eyre Basin is one of the largest internally draining systems in the world and the ecosystems it supports are varied and often unique. Spanning the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland the basin is said to cover about one sixth of the Australian continent.

For much of the time Lake Eyre itself is a dry salt pan but when the rains fall rivers such as the Georgina, Diamantina and Cooper Creek fill the lake and attract bird and wildlife from far and wide.

The Basin is culturally significant and has a long history of Aboriginal and European settlement and use. Sustainable management of its environmental, economic and cultural assets are extremely important.

Our tours travel to Lake Eyre on the Oodnadatta Track and we often camp at Coward Springs which is an oasis in this often harsh desert landscape. The campground has a natural spa where you can enjoy a dip. It also has a heritage-listed railway site with a number of restored historic buildings which are interesting to visit.

The best way to see the Lake is by taking a flight as you can only understand the scale and majestic nature of the Lake from above. It was truley an amazing experience although we were a little disappointed at the lack of birdlife. Our pilot explained that as there had been so much rain the birds had so many choices they weren't congreating in numbers on the lake.

We flew out of William Creek where the hotel is home to 3 permanent residents making this the smallest settlement in South Australia. They're a very friendly group and the pub is a great place to meet a range of interesting fellow travellers. http://williamcreekhotel.net.au/

One of the most fascinating areas at the Sanctuary is the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, a wildlife hospital, that treats more than 2000 sick and injured native animals every year. At Werribee Open Range Zoo animals are kept in their natural environment and tours are run through the park so you can see the animals as close as possible to how they would be in the wild. There seems to be an increasing interest in Australia's indigenous people, their culture and connection to country. From what we've learnt whilst travelling through this amazing land they were the first environmentalists. Their customs ensured their hunting and gathering practices didn't impact the ongoing viability of food sources.They moved with the changing weather patterns and used fire to manage the landscape.
